Сообщение With the doubleheader sweep
While it finished with a bang overall, the Winnipeg Jets first homestand of the season didnt deliver the favorable results many expected before it began. Bryan Littles overtime goal on Sunday afternoon in the clubs 2-1 win over visiting Colorado salvaged the five-game slate in downtown Winnipeg, although the euphoria of that moment only temporarily masked the disappointment of what amounted to a 2-3 record in the teams first significant scheduled stop at home. Many in the Manitoba capital felt the Jets needed to achieve improvement this season at home and within their own division to ultimately be successful. The theory was - and still is - a shift upward in both categories this year would certainly aid in possibly propelling the club to the post-season for the first time since its move from Georgia. Thus far, the team is a game below .500 at home and 1-1 in their division. Now, the calendar hasnt quite turned to November, but the fear in Winnipeg amongst some of the fandom after the first eight games is the season could slip away before it really ever begins in playoff earnest. For head coach Paul Maurice, theres concern over the 3-5 start, but theres an 82-game schedule to play and panic is not part of a constructive process. Every year, its a new team, said Maurice. I know a lot of these guys have played together. But you have new people; new expectations coming in. We should find some joy in the work. You have to re-establish those bonds. Were trying to fight our way through being a quiet team. The second-year Jets bench boss has been asked repeatedly by reporters to judge his teams performance in small segments like the just complete homestand, but the always calm and astute Maurice would rather use 10-game blocks to more effectively get a read on his teams progress or struggles. Either way, Sundays win over Central Division foe Colorado showed more promise in an overall team game. Top line forwards like captain Andrew Ladd and Little both found the scoresheet and the club directed upwards of 80 pucks towards the Avalanche net, 34 of which were blocked. The victory over the Avs also ended a homestand where the emergence of some of the teams prized future started to noticeably become more impactful. For the most part, the play of NHL sophomores Jacob Trouba and Mark Scheifele has been solid and consistent. Although Trouba (0-0-0) has yet to record a point and Scheifele has only two points in eight games, both players have been effective for all the right reasons. The pair are either creating chances that havent been converted to points or controlling elements of the game with and without the puck. Moreover, rookie Adam Lowrys play at centre through the first three weeks of the season has also been considered progressive. This is especially soothing for an organization stringent on its draft and develop philosophy. At just 21 years old, the Calgary product is among the team leaders in hits and has found his way into anchoring the third line with a variety of wingers thus far. He scored his first NHL goal in a 3-1 win over Carolina (Oct. 21) and has averaged well over 11 minutes of ice time per game – a number thats most certainly going to increase as contests tick off the docket. Were young but those guys are part of our team drive, said Maurice. For the two of them anyway, the guys that have put a full year in the NHL when their names are going down, theyre going down in the same mindset as Little and Ladd and these other guys. Theyre all in the same group for me. Those three guys are key pieces. Theyre all in that same group for me. Naturally, there was some chatter about the second-year stumble or sophomore jinx with respect to both Scheifele and Trouba entering this season. But out of the gate, both have shown no indication that the league has caught up to them or they enjoyed any sort of beginners luck a year ago. Both of them have a real good understanding of the game, said Maurice. Were not in a teaching curve for two or three years. They get this stuff real quick. For me, Jacob Trouba is not just back to where he was last year. Hes starting to look even stronger on the ice. To close out October, the Jets venture on the road for four games beginning Tuesday on Long Island against the upstart Islanders (6-2). If this eastern sojourn can produce anything like a .500 or better record, it should serve Winnipeg well in moving ahead with the improvement the organization is striving toward. The trip continues with stops in New Jersey (Thursday), Madison Square Garden (Saturday) and concludes in Chicago (Sunday). NOTES: Injured forward Evander Kane made the trip with the team. A timetable for his return is still uncertain but Maurice indicated on Monday morning theyre shooting for a return to game action after the road trip. Hes still on what the team calls IR skates but as the week moves along, its expected hell start to participate in regular practice and physical contact drills. Bryan Little leads the team with five goals. He has one on the power play, another short-handed and a game-winner. Speaking of the teams power play, it currently ranks third-last in the league with only one tally on 28 chances. After a forgettable plus-minus year last season for Dustin Byfuglien (minus-20), the power forward leads the club on the positive side of the ledger this year at plus-4. In two previous attempts this season, the Jets have yet to win back-to-back games this season. That could end Tuesday against on the Island. Swingman Oscar Robertson Jersey . Off-season additions Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley did not train with the club today, prompting Nelsen to declare its too early to tell if either will be ready for Saturday. Sacramento Kings Jersey . -- Zach Johnson is like most players at the World Challenge, not sure whether hes still playing in 2013 or if hes in the middle of the new wraparound season that officially started in October. . And he said Sunday that players believe nobody in Sterlings family should be able to own the Los Angeles Clippers if hes gone. Mitch Richmond Kings Jersey . Top-seeded Djokovic, who is making only his second appearance this year after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over 54th-ranked Istomin of Uzbekistan. "It wasnt as easy as the scoreline indicates," said Djokovic, who has won in Dubai on four occasions. Mike Bibby Jersey .com) - The Boston Bruins announced Monday that the team has signed goaltender Niklas Svedberg to a one-year contract.Hail to the champions. The Winnipeg Goldeyes are the champions of the American Associations North Division. With a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Sioux Falls Canaries, the Goldeyes improved to 58-33 on the season and wrapped up the North Division pennant with nine games remaining in the schedule. The Fish won game one of Friday nights twin bill 6-3 behind starter Ryan Bollinger and then took game two, 2-0 as Nick Hernandez won his 11th game of the season by throwing a five-hit shutout. It was the win in game two that locked up the regular season title and sent the Goldeyes into the playoffs for the seventh time in Rick Forneys nine seasons as Goldeyes manager. "There isnt a guy in that clubhouse who didnt want the ball in that game tonight and I was about as happy as I could be to the one who got the start," said Hernandez. "When I think about the fact that I missed two-and-a-half years of baseball because my arm just wouldnt do what I needed it to do and when I think about the bad start I got off to this season (his ERA was 7.29 after his first three starts), Im just happy that Rick gave me the ball tonight. "This is a great team. Maybe the best team Ive played on in my career. Im so fortunate to be here. We look up at that 2012 Championship pennant banner every day and we want one of those. Thats the goal. This is a great start but there is more work to do yet." After taking the opener 6-3, the Goldeyes got two runs in the first inning of the nightcap and thats all they needed. Brock Bond led off with a single, Jake Blackwood was hit by a pitch, and then Tyler Kuhn hit a ground rule double into the Goldeyes bullpen to score Bond with what turned out to be the winning run. Casey Haerther grounded out, but Blackwood scored from third and the Goldeyes had more than they needed with Hernandez on the mound. After the game, in the midst of a champagne celebration, Forney told his team how proud he was of their accomplishment. "You guys have done everything Ive asked oof you from day one," he said.dddddddddddd "Im so proud of all of you." With the doubleheader sweep, the Goldeyes won their sixth and seventh straight games and have now won 11 of their last 12. It didnt matter what second-place St. Paul did in Lincoln on Friday night. The Fish wrapped it up when Hernandez struck out Sioux Falls shortstop Stephen Branca to record the final out. Hernandez (11-2, 3.13 ERA) got the complete-game win while Kye Winter (1-3, 7.04 ERA) suffered the loss. The Goldeyes finished with two runs on only four hits while Sioux Falls had no runs on five hits. Goldeyes playoff tickets are now on sale. The first two games of the post-season will be played at Winnipegs Shaw Park on Sept. 3 and 4. The Goldeyes opponent is yet to be determined. In Friday nights first game, the Goldeyes fell behind 2-0 after the top of the first but answered the bell in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Down two-zip, the Fish got a single from Jake Blackwood and then after Tyler Kuhn walked and Casey Haerther singled to load the bases. Reggie Abercrombie was safe on a fielders choice and drove in Blackwood for Winnipegs first run. Donnie Webbs infield single drove home Kuhn to make it 2-2 and then Josh Mazzolas solid single to left brought in Abercrombie to give Winnipeg a 3-2 lead. In the second, the Goldeyes went ahead 5-2 as Brock Bond walked, stole second and scored on Kuhns single and then, after Haerther walked, Abercrombie drove home Kuhn with a base hit. A.J. Kirby-Jones homered for Sioux Falls to make the score 5-3, but Kuhn hit a long solo homer in the fourth to make it 6-3 and the Goldeyes were on the threshold of the post-season. Bollinger (2-0, 4.09 ERA) got the victory while Sioux Falls starter Matt Wickswat (3-8, 6.20 ERA) pitched a complete game but took the loss. Chris Kissock (3.07 ERA) picked up his 16th save of the season for Winnipeg. The Goldeyes finished with six runs on nine hits while New Jersey had three runs on nine scattered hits.
